Pollinate Energy is a not-for-profit social business providing access to affordable clean energy technology that improves the livelihood of poor people living in Indias urban slums.

An Indian adventure…

In 2012 a microfinance fieldworker, renewable energy developer and a researcher travelled from Australia to Bangalore, India.

We saw first-hand the thousands of families living in temporary tent slums around Bangalore. They got their light from a naked kerosene flame,  which caused burns, house fires and breathing problems.

The trip inspired us to co-found Pollinate Energy – to move to India and do our bit to address energy poverty.

A unique combination of microfinance, renewable energy and ongoing franchise support

In developing Pollinate Energy, we found that there had been countless campaigns to provide free renewable energy products to impoverished communities in India. Many of these have resulted in misused, malfunctioning and ultimately abandoned equipment. This is partly due to the lack of ongoing business and customer support.

We’ve designed a model that overcomes these problems. It incorporates the true requirements of ongoing market research, sales, distribution, maintenance and microfinance to allow customers to buy the products over a number of weeks. This long term approach ensures we can sustain support to both our micro-franchisees and their customers, keeping the lights on in India’s urban slums.

How can you help?

In a little over six months, we've trained 5 local entrepreneurs, or ‘Pollinators’, and helped them set up their renewable energy franchises. We’ve reached over 100 communities as a result.

This is a great achievement by our Pollinators. But our market research has shown that this is less than 5% of the people currently living without electricity in Bangalore. There are thousands more in Bangalore and tens of millions more across India who are still living in darkness.

Your contribution will help us turn on the lights for these people. By supporting the start-up of 5 new Pollinators, you are helping us set up 5 new micro-franchisees and expand to 5 new regions in Bangalore, serving approximately 100 new communities and over 5000 individuals.

To thank you for your help, we have some gifts to pass on, based on how much you contribute. These include your very own solar powered light, which you can use to light up a part of your home or garden and remind you of the families you’ve lifted out of the dark.

Having watched our Pollinators flourish and reach more communities than we could have imagined, we're confident that, with your help, the new Pollinators we can train will take another step on the road to a world free of energy poverty.

What will the money be spent on?

Total
$10,000
150 solar lighting kits $3,000
Starter kits for 5 pollinators $4,500
Pollinate Energy training support costs $2,500
Total $10,000
